Welcome to Your Brain: RAF Scholar Helps Unlock Mysteries Behind Our Thinking

October 2009

Rita Allen Foundation (RAF) Scholar Dr. Sam Wang, Ph.D., has turned the complicated field of neuroscience into fun for his students and the general public.

Dr. Wang and co-author Dr. Sandra Aamodt, Ph.D., have managed to get inside our heads and answer some of life’s most pressing questions in their acclaimed book, Welcome to Your Brain. In their collaborative effort, neuroscientists Aamodt and Wang explain how the human brain processes sensory and cognitive information, regulates our emotional life, and forms memories. They also examine how human brains differ from those of other mammals and show what happens to us during dreams. The success of Welcome to Your Brain has made them national celebrities and fixtures on NPR and in such publications as the New York Times and Washington Post, commenting on why we do what we do and what makes us tick. Dr. Wang’s observations help explain everything from science to sexuality, palates to politics.

In addition to his prolific writing, Dr. Wang heads the Wang lab at Princeton University, which focuses on three areas: dendritic integration in neural circuits, brain architecture and evolution, and the cerebellum, with an emphasis on multiphoton optical methods.

Dr. Wang was selected as a RAF Scholar in 2000.
