Rita Allen Foundation Partner Schedules Inspiring Events

March 2011

One of our partners promoting civic literacy and involvement, Facing History and Ourselves, is hosting two free events in our nation’s capital on the evening of February 23rd.

Their “Choosing to Participate Opening Celebration and Symposium” begins with a reception from 5:30 p.m.–6:45 p.m. at the Historical Society of Washington DC, 801 K Street Northwest, Washington, D.C. 20001; (202) 383-1800

Friends, educators, and community members are invited to tour the Facing History exhibition, and enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres.

After the reception, “Give Bigotry No Sanction: Exploring Religious Freedom and Democracy” will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Through this symposium, Facing History is conducting a public dialogue on the nature of citizenship, religious freedom, and equality in our democracy.

Speakers include President of NYU John Sexton; co-founder and Executive Director of the American Islamic Congress Zainab Al-Suwaij; Director of the Religious Freedom Education Project Dr. Charles Haynes; and Adam Strom, Director of Content, Research and Development, Facing History and Ourselves.

The Walmart Foundation is the national sponsor of Choosing to Participate. This event is co-hosted by Facing History and Ourselves, New York University, and NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, and is sponsored by the George Washington Institute for Religious Freedom.
